Real Thread had the privilege of talking with General Assembly about their apparel, their culture and why they chose to print apparel with Real Thread.
Why did General Assembly decide to do apparel?
When we started working with Real Thread, we were specifically in need of hoodies for our Immersive students. Immersive students are in the process of changing their careers and lives, so giving the students hoodies customized with their course abbreviation emblazoned on the sleeve is a way to both acknowledge their hard work and dedication, and also build camaraderie. After they’ve graduated, many continue wear their hoodies with pride—I’ve definitely seen them in the wild, on the subway and in restaurants in New York City, but our grads all over the globe wear them! The hoodies are definitely a big signifier that you are a member of the General Assembly community.
Why did General Assembly use Real Thread?
Real Thread’s quality was the number one reason we wanted work with them! We ordered their sample pack first, and after seeing the softness and level of detail achievable with their discharge and water-based inks we knew we wanted to print with them. The inks feel soft and “worn in” from day one, which really encourages folks to wear them right away! Real Thread’s ability to do oversized printing was also a big plus—we’re definitely going to explore that for future apparel.
How does General Assembly use apparel to build culture?
Apparel definitely builds our community for students, but also for staff. Everyone at General Assembly is really proud of the work we do to empower students to change their lives, so wearing a GA tee is a way of showcasing that pride.
Real Thread recently came to do a live screen-printing demo at our office. The staff got to print their own tees with a special GA design in a demo. Seeing the process of the screen-printing was exciting for everyone from the Design team to Finance!
